Un "theotokion" est un tropaire dans lequel la Théotokos est célébrée ou invoquée. On trouve l'expression "biblion theotokia" dans la diataxis de Maxime, fondateur du monastère de Boreinè (doc. Vatopedi I, no. 15) [1].
Le theotokarion est le livre liturgique qui contient ces tropaires. Au nombre de 56, ils sont divisés en huit séries, chantées chacune sur l'un des huit modes.
